NHS is chartered by the
National Association of Secondary School Principals for the purpose
of recognizing and encouraging students who show a rare combination
of outstanding scholarship, integrity of character, leadership and
service. Students are given an opportunity to express in writing
why they are qualified for membership and why they want to be a
member. Nominees may not have more than 6 (six) detentions in a
given year. Selection is then made by a seven-member faculty council
and is based on the recommendation of the entire faculty with final
approval given by the principal. There are approximately 100 members
each year, and the cost is $10 for dues plus approximately $125
for students who choose to attend the three-day state conference
at Jekyll Island. Students volunteer for the August book sale, Thanksgiving
Food Drive, Induction, State Convention, book return, tutoring program,
mini-class night, among other events. At graduation, seniors
wear a gold NHS cowl signifying their accomplishments and membership
in the Society.
Members must attend all
meetings, participate in all activities, maintain the GPA required
for admission, pay dues, and maintain good character by obtaining
no more than 6 detentions to remain in the National Honor Society.
