St.
Pius X traveled to face AAAA opponent Whitewater in Fayette County
at Wildcat Stadium.
The
Golden Lions registered their 10 th shutout of the season with senior
Mike Fiorello registering the shutout at goalkeeper. The shutout
was definitely a team effort as it is in the traditional St. Pius
X fashion. The back line defenders comprising of senior John McNabb,
juniors Jonathan Morgan and Chris Philpott, sophomore Sean Melton
and freshman Nolan McKeever shut down the attack of the Whitewater
Wildcats, not allowing a shot on goal in the first half and only
allowing 3 shots on goal for the match. They were assisted by the
exceptional defensive effort of the midfield as well as the strikers.
A defensive effort such as witnessed Friday night against a top
quality program cannot be turned in without solid team play.
It
was the most solid team performance of the year. The majority of
the game was controlled by the Golden Lions squad as they challenged
the Wildcats the full length of the field winning most fifty-fifty
opportunities and stopping the Whitewater set pieces.
The
Golden Lions goal was scored when freshman Stephen McGill found
the back of the net with 17:20 remaining in the 1 st half on a rebound
shot.
The
Golden Lions return home for a match with Catholic school rival
