Paul Standard
HEAD VARSITY COACH

Coach Standard enters his eighth year as Head Football Coach and has the second best record at St. Pius X behind legendary Coach George B. Maloof with a career record of 54-27. The 2007 team finished with an 8-4 record and a fifth trip to the AAAA State Playoffs. The 2006 team finished with the best record in 38 years with a 11-3 record and a trip to the Georgia Dome for the State Semi-Finals, the Golden Lions finished with a #4 state ranking. In 2005 team finished 5-5 and for only the 2nd time in the past seven years did not advance to the State Playoffs. His 2004 squad posted a 8-3 record and a third straight appearance in the state playoffs. His 2003 squad posted a 10-3 record and a trip to the State Quarter Finals-the best record in the past 35 years. That season was highlighted by a 20-17 victory over Marist which broke a 21 year drought in this great rivalry. The 2003 Golden Lions finished with a final state ranking of 7th in class AAAA. His 2002 squad posted a 7-4 record, advancing to the State Playoffs. Coach Standard played for the legendary Coach George B. Maloof and is one of five classmates of 1980 to coach football. A 1984 graduate of The Citadel with a B.S. in Business Administration, Coach Standard teaches economics, accounting, and physical education at St. Pius. He coached at Loganville for a year (1985 Defensive/Offensive Line), Meadowcreek for five years (1986-1990 Offensive/Defensive Line) and ten years at Dacula (1991-2000 Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Backs) under Coach Kevin Maloof (SPX '75). At Dacula, his teams were the Region Champions in 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1999 (co-champs) and in 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1999, they were State Quarter Finalists. Coach Standard was named Assistant Coach of the Year in 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1999. He is married to the former Cindy Renee Harper. They have four children; Paul III (P.G.), 18; Elizabeth, 17, Mary Kate, 14, and Margaret May, 4.

Jerry Stewart
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Coach Stewart enters his sixth year at St. Pius as the Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach. He brings with him an impressive wealth of experience including eight years as the Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator for Parkview High School during which time his teams won 4 State Championships and own the Georgia State Consecutive Win Record after going 45-0. Coach Stewart also coached for five years at Shiloh High School, sixteen years at Tucker High School and three years at Westmer High School in Illinois. A graduate of Eastern Illinois University with a B.S. Ed and an M.S. Ed, Coach Stewart teaches physical education at St. Pius X. He and his wife Sharon, a Spanish teacher at Brookwood High School, have four children; Kevin, a Furman graduate and football player, is a math, his wife Krista teaches health at Parkview High School and is expecting their first child (Coach Stewart’s first grandchild) in October. teacher at Oconee County High School; Kim, an Auburn graduate, a guidance counselor/graduation coach at North Gwinnett High School; Shannon, an Auburn graduate, who lives and works in Charleston, SC and Todd is a senior education major at Georgia Southern University.

 

Chad Garrison
OFFENSIVE LINE, HEAD JV COACH, AND HEAD BOYS AND GIRLS TRACK COACH

Coach Garrison enters his ninth year at St. Pius X as the offensive line coach and seventh as the Physical Education Department Chair. A 1990 graduate of North Georgia College he began his teaching and coaching career at Campbell High School where he taught for nine years. At Campbell he served as the varsity defensive line coach (1994-1996) and Defensive Coordinator (1995-1996), Offensive Line Coach (1994-1999) and Offensive Coordinator (1997-1998). He also coached 9th grade/JV boys basketball (1991-1997) and was the Head Boys Soccer Coach form 1991-1994. During the 1999-2000 school year, Mr. Garrison coaches at The Lovett School working with the tight ends and defensive ends during the fall and served as an assistant boy’s soccer coach/goalkeeper coach in the spring. Since arriving at St. Pius X Catholic High School, Coach Garrison along with his offensive line responsibilities, was the Head Strength and Conditioning coach from 2000-2006. In 2006 he was named the Head Boys and Girls Track and Field Coach. Over the past three years both the boys and girls have won team state championships and three region titles (boys 2/girls 1). Coach Garrison was named Track and Field Coach of the Year in 2006 and has also been named assistant coach of the year in football (1992, 1993) and basketball (1993, 1994). He and his wife of 20 years, Barbara, have three children-Kelci, 18; Mackenzie, 13; and Brennan, 11.

J.T. Gilbert
OFFENSIVE BACKS AND HEAD BASEBALL COACH

Coach Gilbert enters his eighth year at St. Pius X. The first five years Coach Gilbert was the 9th Grade Head Football Coach, this year he will again coach the Varsity Running Backs. Coach Gilbert is also the Varsity Baseball Head Coach. A graduate of Aquinas High School in LaCrosse, Wisconsin where he was a three sport athlete, Coach Gilbert received a scholarship to play baseball at the University of Minnesota . He graduated from Viterbo University with a degree in Religious Studies and then coached baseball at Viterbo University for four years. Coach Gilbert teaches religion at St. Pius X.

 

 

BOB GILBERT
DEFENSIVE ENDS COACH

Coach Gilbert is beginning his eighth year at St. Pius as a football coach. This year Coach Gilbert will coach the defensive ends. Last year Coach Gilbert was the Head 9th Grade coach-for the past six years he has coached the defensive secondary and coordinated of all special teams. He received a B.S. in Physical Education from Virginia Tech in 1988 and an I.M.A. from the University of South Carolina in 1995. He coached at Dacula High School for seven years and then went to Forsyth Central for two years as a football coach and Head Baseball Coach. Coach Gilbert teaches Physical Education and is the Head 9th Grade Baseball Coach. He and his wife Margaret, a swimming and diving coach at St. Pius, have four daughters; Katy, 14; Sara, 11; Jill, 7; and Mary Margaret 3

 

 

CHRIS FASON
RECEIVERS COACH

Coach Chris Fason enters his third year coaching Varsity Receivers for St. Pius. After serving in the United States Marine Corps, Coach Chris Fason attended Georgia College & State University where he played for three years on the GC&SU Golf Team. Coach Fason started his coaching career in Washington County and was on staff for the (15-0) 1997 AA Golden Hawks Football State Championship. From 2000-2002, Coach Fason taught Special Ed at Roswell High School and was the Head 9th Grade Football & Baseball coach. Coach Fason currently teaches PE at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic School in Sandy Springs. Coach Fason recently celebrated 9 years of marriage to his wife, Megan, and his greatest achievements are named Maggie (7), Mary Beth (5), and Olivia (1 1/2).

 

Danny Daniel
SECONDARY COACH AND SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR

Coach Daniel is starting his second year at St. Pius, a native of Lexington, Georgia. He graduated in 1970 from Oglethorpe County High School. Following graduation he attended Tennessee Military Institute and Georgia Southern College where he graduated in 1975 with an Education Degree in Social Studies. Coach Daniel began his teaching and coaching career at Oglethorpe and Madison Counties. In 1982 he returned to Georgia Southern where he coached as a graduate assistant, coaching Tight Ends and Wide Receivers. In 1984 he received his Masters Degree in Health and Physical Education. The past 23 years he has spent teaching and coaching in the state of Georgia, and this past year he retired from Mill Creek High School in Gwinnett County. He will continue to teach at Mill Creek half day while coaching football at St. Pius. Coach Daniel and his wife the former Cindy Beggs of Royston have been married for 30 years. They have two children, Laney who is 22 and Clark who will be a sophomore at St. Pius this year.

 

BRYAN PINABELL
DEFENSIVE LINE AND VIDEO/SCOUTING COORDINATOR

Coach Pinabell who is returning to St. Pius X was born in Boston, Mass. He graduated from Melbourne Central Catholic High School in Melbourne, Florida where he was All-State in baseball and played four years of varsity football. Coach Pinabell attended the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida where he graduated with a degree in Secondary Education. Coach Pinabell began his coaching career at his alma mater (MCC) in 1992 where he remained until 2000. He coached at North Gwinnett HS for one year and then moved on St. Pius X in 2001. Coach Pinabell assisted in coordinating the defense while at SPX and helped lead them to 4 playoff appearances in 5 years. He was named the 4th Head Coach in the history of OLM in January 2006. During his two years at OLM he directed the Bobcats to their best record in school history and set the foundation for future success. We at St. Pius are blessed to have him back. He is married to Andrea who is a Chemical Engineer for Kimley-Horn Associates. The Pinabell's have a son Anthony who was born on October 20, 2007.

 

CASEY EUART
TIGHT ENDS

Coach Euart begins his first year at St. Pius X. Coach Euart is a 2002 graduate of St. Pius X where he was the starting quarterback in Coach Standard’s first year at St. Pius X. Euart led the Golden Lions to a 5-5 record and he and his class were instrumental in “Restoring the Tradition” of Golden Lion Football. Coach Euart is a 2007 graduate of the College of Charleston.

 

 

 

 

jEFF MASSEY
STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

Coach Massey begins his second year at St. Pius serving as Strength Coach and Head Wrestling Coach. Prior to his arrival at St. Pius he has served in previous capacities at the college level; including stops at UTC, Arkansas State, and the University of Oklahoma. Coach Massey will teach Wt. Training, Computer Applications, and Economics at St. Pius this school year.

TOM LOZANO
HEAD 9TH GRADE COACH

Tom Lozano begins his third year at St. Pius X Catholic High School. Coach Lozano comes to St. Pius X from Shiloh High in Gwinnett County. He has 32 years of coaching experience in Dekalb and Gwinnett Counties, including head coaching stops at Cross Keys High and Meadowcreek High. He is a graduate of St. Joseph’s High Atlanta, and received his B.S. in Chemistry from Notre Dame. He also has a M.Ed. and Eds. In Science Education from Georgia State University. He will be teaching physics and chemistry. Coach Lozano has been married to his wife Latain for 33 years and has two children, Thomas and Jeff.

 

 

 

jim walsh
9TH GRADE ASSISTANT COACH

Coach Walsh begins his 37h year of coaching football. He is married to Susan Grant Walsh (35years!) and they have four children; Colleen 34 Nancy Gosperdek 32 Bobby 29 and Meghan 26 They also have two grandchildren, Grant Gosperdek 4 and Ali Gosperdek 3. Coach Walsh graduated from the University of Georgia with a BS Ed. and a Masters Degree from Georgia State University. Coach Walsh was named the National Assistance Coach of the Year in 2002. Coach Walsh has been Head Basketball Coach at Riverwood High and the Georgia State Track Coach of the Year in 1982. He is also Eucharistic Minister to the Sick, involved in the Night Shelter, and a teacher with the 100 Black Men of Atlanta. Coach Walsh also served in the United States Navy 1965-1968. Coach Walsh will coach the 9th Grade Football Team serving as the Offensive Line Coach.

 

RON MANGRUM
9TH GRADE ASSISTANT COACH

Ron Mangrum enters his fourth term at St. Pius X Catholic High School. This time he will serve as the 9th Grade Defensive Coordinator. His previous stints at SPX was 1973 to 1980 and 2001-2002, and 2006. Mangrum is in his 35th year of coaching. He has also taught and coached at Cross Keys High 1980-1984, Duluth High 1985-1996, Meadowcreek High1997-2000, and Peachtree Ridge High 2003-2005. Coach Mangrum is still single and plans on staying that way.

 

 

 

 

Scott Carter
ASSISTANT FRESHMAN COACH

Coach Carter starts his tenth year at St. Pius. He has coached the varsity backs/receivers and he will coach defensive ends and running backs for the freshman team. A graduate of Auburn University, Coach Carter was an All-Conference lacrosse player and 1998 Auburn Player of the Year. He previously coached football at Byram Hills HS in NY. Coach Carter teaches Social Studies and is our Varsity Swimming Head Coach and the Head Coach of our Boys Lacrosse Team. He and his wife Sarah have a daughter, Darby Jameson.

 

 

 

TIM LISTER
ASSISTANT FRESHMAN COACH

Tim Lister enters his 14th year coaching freshman football as a community coach working with receivers and defensive backs. A 1988 graduate of St. pius, Coach Lister played free safety for four years at Maryville College in Maryville, TN. Coach Lister is a firefighter in Buford for Gwinnett County and a member of their Swiftwater Rescue Team. He has two children Jacob and Jenna.

 

 

 

 

TRAY WHITE
ASSISTANT FRESCOACH

Born in Savannah, GA, Coach White attended Benedictine Military School (’05). He was a varsity letterman in football for the Cadets. He is currently enrolled at Georgia State University with plans to major in history. This will be Coach White’s third year coaching football as the 7th grade offensive line coach.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

TERRY OWENS
HEAD 8TH GRADE COACH

Coach Owens enters his 14th year as a community coach. He is the head coach of the 8th Grade Football program. Coach Owens started his career at the University of Alabama, then transferred to Jacksonville State University, and signed by the CFL Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He & his wife, Donna have 5 children, Terry Lee 28, Alexis who is married and lives in Tennessee 25, Jacqueline 23, Elizabeth 19, and Natalie 17. All 5 children have attended or are attending SPX.

ASSISTANT 8TH GRADE COACH

Coach Cone begins his 7th year at St. Pius as a community coach. He attended Georgia Tech on a football scholarship and graduated with a degree in Industrial Management. Coach Cone was drafted by the New York Jets and played three years with that team as a running back. He has been a youth league coach for 15 years at Central DeKalb. He and his wife Janet have three children; Kevin, 19, a football player at Georgia Tech, Zachary, 18; a graduate of Parkview High School who was drafted by the California Angels in this past spring draft, and Amy, 15.

 

 

 

Mike Fannon
ASSISTANT 8TH GRADE COACH

Coach Fannon (SPX ’74) played under legendary coach George B. Maloof and lettered also in basketball and track. Coach Fannon then walked on at Youngstown State University in Ohio 1974-78. He coached at Ursiline Catholic High School and Chaney High School in Youngstown. He played semi-pro football for the Youngstown Hardhats of the Middle Atlantic Football League 1981-82 and for the Acworth Chargers of the Georgia Football League in 1983. He was the head coach at St. Luke’s Middle School in Boardman, OH, winning 2 league championships in the Youngstown Diocesese League. Coach Fannon also coached at Our Lady of the Assumption Raiders 1984-85. Coach Fannon has also coached at St. Pius X as the JV linebackers coach in 1996 under head coach John Alexander (SPX ’80). He has been a police officer in Dekalb County for 24 years. Coach Fannon is married to Paula Fannon (SPX ’82). They have two daughters: Danielle (SPX ’07) and is a sophomore at Georgia Southern, and Megan SPX Class of 2009, who is on the St. Pius X Track Team.

TOM KSIONZYK
ASSISTANT 8TH GRADE COACH

Coach Ksionzyk begins his fourth year coaching football at St. Pius. He is currently coaching running backs and defensive backs. Coach Ksionzyk is also a Varsity Assistant Baseball Coach at St. Pius. Tom lives in Decatur with his wife Anne and has two sons, Kevin, St. Pius class of '05, and Brady, a freshman at Decatur High School

ASSISTANT 8TH GRADE COACH

Coach McCormick begins his sixth year at St. Pius X. He will serve as the Defensive Coordinator for the 8th Grade Team. Coach McCormick’s son Kevin is a 2006 graduate of St. Pius X and is a diver at the University of Alabama.

 

 

 

 

 

Brian connors
HEAD 7TH GRADE COACH

Coach Connors begins his sixth year at St. Pius X. Coach Connors is a 1980 graduate of St. Pius X and a teammate of Coach Standard. Coach Connors has coached youth football for several years at Roswell Youth Football Association before coming to St. Pius X. He and his wife Maria have four children, Brian (16) a junior football player, Alexis (14) a freshman at SPX, Joey (11) a 6th grade student and IHM, and Andrea (4).

 

 

 

 

Harry Bacheller
8TH GRADE ASSISTANT COACH

Coach Bacheller begins his 8th year as a community coach, this year Coach Bacheller will serve as offensive coordinator for the 8th Grade Team after serving five years as the varsity receivers coach. During his college career he played defensive back for Sioux Falls College and the University of Washington. Coach Bacheller is a new business development officer for a local asset based lender. Coach Bacheller is also the Athletic Director at Christ the King School. He and his wife, Terri, have three children; Austin, 19; Ryan, 17 and Madeleine, 11.

 

Gary Schmitt
TEAM TRAINER

Gary Schmitt, a certified athletic trainer, begins his seventh year as the school's full time trainer. Before coming to St. Pius, Gary worked with world renowned orthopedic surgeon James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama. He has also worked preseason camps with the Atlanta Falcons. Originally from Wisconsin, Gary earned his Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin in Oshkosh and then moved south to earn his Master's degree at Eastern Kentucky University. Coach Schmitt is still single but looks to settle down soon.

 

 

Mark Cullen, M.D.
TEAM PHYSICIAN/ORTHOPAEDIST

Dr. Cullen is one of ten children and was raised in Reading, PA. He begins his seventh year as the Golden Lions team doctor. He received his undergraduate degree from Bucknell University and his medical degree from Temple University. Dr. Cullen received his Orthopaedic training at the University of Cincinnati and completed an extra year in subspecialty training after residency in sports medicine at Cincinnati Sports Medicine. He has been in practice in Georgia for six years and recently opened his own practice, Georgia Sports Medicine. He was honored by the Southeastern Athletic Trainers Association as Sports Medicine Person of the Year in 2001 for his involvement with high school sports. He and his wife Michelle have four children; Isabelle, 7, Davis, 6, Lillian, 5, and Ford,3

 

BOB LATTY
VIDEO COORDINATOR

Bob is beginning his 5th year at St. Pius as a volunteer video coordinator. He received a B.S. in Secondary Education from Butler University in 1978. Bob is a project consultant with Draper & Associates. He and his wife Eileen have 4 children, 3 of them graduates from SPX and the 4th is a sophomore at SPX.

 

 

 

 

 

Bill Rigdon
WEBCAST COMMENTATOR

Bill Rigdon has been webcasting Golden Lions football games since 2005. A Georgia Tech graduate, he is a voiceover artist and computer programmer. Bill's son, Will, is a two-sport athlete and 2007 graduate of St. Pius. Daughter Catherine is a member of the Class of 2011, as well as an athletic trainer for the Golden Lions. Bill's interests include broadcasting, voice work, NASCAR and, of course, Golden Lions Football.
